The Quiet Work of Love

The hardest seasons aren't always about falling out of love...sometimes they're about learning how to love differently.

Sooo ... Maybe This Is What Healing Really Looks Like...

I've been sitting with a lot lately.

Not because I have the answers, but because for the first time in a really long time I don't feel like I need to rush to find them. I just want to understand them.

I think that's what healing has done for me.

It's slowed me down enough to actually feel.

Life is interesting because I spent years wishing my partner in life would become curious about himself. I wanted him to stop surviving and start asking why he reacted the way he did, why he shut down, why everything always seemed so heavy to carry. I knew there was more underneath it all, I just couldn't reach it for him.

Now...he's there.

He's diving into his childhood, his past, the pain, the shame, the guilt, all the things that shaped him into the man he is today and I honestly couldn't be more grateful because I know how much courage that takes.

But here's the part nobody really talks about...

Why do I feel more alone now than I did before?

How can I be so happy for someone I love so deeply while also feeling so unseen?

Maybe because while he's looking back at his life, I'm standing here quietly wondering if anyone notices mine. Where do I fit in all of this.

I've done a lot of healing these past years too. Not perfectly because I'm still learning every single day, still getting triggered, still having moments where old patterns show up, still trying to figure out who Sophie really is underneath all the titles of wife, mom, friend, sister, daughter, nurse, caregiver, business owner and everything else I've carried.

Nothing is perfect.

I certainly am not.

But one thing I do know is that my heart feels different than it used to.

I don't want conversations from a place of blame anymore.

I don't want to react from hurt.

I don't want to fight just so I can finally feel heard.

I want to sit beside someone and say, "Help me understand."

I want us both to be curious.

About ourselves.

About each other.

About the relationship we've spent all these years building.

The hard part though is that healing doesn't erase the hurt.

It doesn't suddenly make years of feeling alone disappear.

It doesn't magically take away the sting of selfish decisions that happened over and over again.

I can understand why they happened now.

I really can.

I have so much compassion for the little boy inside the man I married.

But compassion doesn't mean my own heart forgets.

Those two things get to exist together.

I can have empathy for his pain while still grieving mine.

Sometimes I think healing can become so focused on ourselves that we accidentally stop seeing the people walking beside us.

Maybe that's where I am today.

Standing beside someone who's finally learning who he is while quietly hoping he'll turn around and ask me who I've become too.

Because I've changed.

So much.

I don't think people realize that healing isn't becoming someone new.

It's remembering who you were before life convinced you that you had to be someone else.

I've softened.

I've learned to breathe before reacting.

I've learned that my nervous system deserves safety.

I've learned that my voice deserves space.

I've learned that boundaries aren't punishment, they're love.

I've learned that forgiveness isn't pretending something didn't hurt.

It's choosing not to let that hurt define every tomorrow.

Some days I miss the ocean more than I can explain.

Maybe because that's where I feel closest to myself.

The waves never apologize for coming and going.

They don't rush.

They don't force.

They simply return.

Again.

And again.

Maybe relationships are meant to be a little like that too.

Not perfect.

Not without storms.

Not without seasons where the tide pulls us apart.

But always willing to return.

Today I'm hopeful.

And if I'm really honest...

I'm hurting too.

Maybe both can be true.

Maybe that's what healing actually looks like.

Not pretending everything is okay.

Not pretending we've arrived.

Just two imperfect people trying to find their way back to themselves and hopefully...back to each other.

One conversation.

One choice.

One moment of compassion at a time.

Are YOU going through this season that isn't talked about but secretly held in place?

Know that you are not alone, these are the hard conversations to have...if I can help in any way, please reach out! I'm here too and its not done alone.

Your friend 🧡 in life,

Sophie
